Nelson Mandela Day was first celebrated on July 18 2010, after the UN declared it in 2009. It was Nelson Mandela's idea to celebrate his birthday as Mandela Day.

Meaning 

Nelson Mandela was an inspiration to Millions and his contribution to society cannot be counted. Nelson Mandela directed a campaign of peaceful, nonviolent defiance against the South African government and its racist policies. Nelson Mandela in his speech told that "Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it". Nelson Mandela always had an idea that a Man's goodness is a flame that can be hidden but never extinguished.
