History 

The correct history behind World Junk Food Day is not very clear but there is an assumption that it was created by a "healthy-diet" person who wanted to have a cheat day on 21 July. After WW2, junk food chains really started getting a lift off and slowly made a billion dollar market.

Meaning 

Junk Foods are known as so because of the ill effects of it. Junk foods have an infinite pool ranging from gum, candy, sweet desserts, fried fast food, carbonated beverages. Some of the more controversial foods that are debated as junk food or healthy food are pizza, taco, hamburger, ice-cream. Some of the ill effects of Junk Food are :-

➤ Obesity

One of the most common and perceivable effects of junk food is a rise in obesity in an individual. Junk foods are loaded with sugars, calories and fats that are a prime factor resulting in weight gain. 


 Learning and memory problems

High intake of sugars and fats tend to suppress the function of the brain that helps in learning and memory formation. This phenomenon is especially observed in growing children when their learning is at its highest. 


 Loss of appetite and digestion

One of the bad effects of junk food is overeating. One may end up eating more than they require due to the fluctuation in their blood sugar levels. 


 Mental impact leading to depression

Excess consumption of junk foods changes the chemical composition of your brain. This change makes your body more dependent on such junk foodstuffs and craves them more and more. 


 Inadequate growth and development

A healthy body requires essential nutrients for its growth and development. While the bad effects of junk food are evident, they lack basic nutrition too.
